Macao (in english and in chinese) or Macau (in portuguese – I prefer it this way because it’s closer to my Moldavian accent) is one hour away by ferry from Hong Kong. Since 1999 it’s a special administrative area of China, with a full autonomy, at least until 2049. Macau has 38 casinos and it’s called Las Vegas of Asia.

I’ve spent three weeks in Macau and during this time I wrote everything that I’ve observed different from Romania. First, to answer to my friends questions about Macau, and then I couldn’t stop writing because I kept observing things that amazed me. Even though the things that I wrote might sound like generalizations, I have to say that these are just things that I saw in this period and that I might be wrong.

In brief, I enjoyed Macau a lot. For the long answer, read below.

When they go out to the restaurant, macanese people don’t ask for the first or second course or dessert. They order everything at once and they share it.

A specific desert for Macau is an egg tart (pastry shell, pudding cream and on top a crust kind of Crème brûlée).

At the restaurant, you receive free water, tea or juice. When you finished your drink, somebody refills your glass.

Passion fruit, despite the romantic name, is so fucking sour. Mango, instead, is the best. It has nothing to do with the taste we know in Romania. But there is a king of all weird fruits and this is, without thinking too much, the durian fruit. With his spiky shell and creamy pulp, the taste it seemed to me like caramelized onion + garlic + peanuts/almond. The smell is weird. I mean it actually stinks so bad, that in some parts of Southeast Asia it’s forbidden to bring the fruit in the hotel or in the public transportation (it smells even it’s uncut).

We enjoyed Vietnamese and Japanese food, but I didn’t have the courage to try Chinese food (I’ve heard that it tastes and smells awful). At least the yellow ducks and the red chicken, hanged in the window, they don’t look tasty.

Some restaurants have aquariums instead of the showcase, with big fish, shrimps or giant crabs. I think they can be ordered in the restaurant and cooked, although they are very expensive.

A lot of fast food restaurants exhibit in the showcase plates with plastic food that looks very real.

Men belch loudly and spit even in the pool, if they need to. Women cough without covering their mouth with one hand.

They walk with the corner of the phone near to their mouth or to the ear, which means that they send or receive WhatsApp audio messages.

Pedestrians are very respectful with the drivers. Even if they are 20 pedestrians, they don’t cross the road until one driver stops or one pedestrian (mostly tourists, akka Teddy Madalin) dares to put his foot on the crosswalk.

Sometimes it can be difficult to find someone to speak English with.

Elevii poartă uniforme.

The students wear uniforms.

Young women wear discreet make-up and they choose their clothes with a lot of taste.

I saw a lot of boys with red or purple hair.

The chinese people don’t seem to take care of their teeth.

They don’t stare at you if you are European, although you may have the surprise of being asked to take a picture by an Asian person (been there, done that).

The official currency is Macanese Pataca, almost equal to the Hong Kong Dollar and double to  Leu.

Every product from the supermarket it’s packed in plastic. Plus, all  fruits and  vegetables are sold on polystyrene trays. On the street, you can find bins for different kind of garbage, but if you want to collect your waste separately at home, you cannot do that because there’s no place to throw it. The casinos offer water for free in 250 ml bottles, so they generate a lot of plastic waste.

At the shop, the vendors put your shoppings in free bags, made from a durable plastic. If you refuse the bags, they thank you.

When you eat at the restaurant, you receive only one napkin, maximum two (in Bucharest, in some places you can get even half of a package), and at some restaurants you can choose between stainless steel or wood cutlery.

Macanese people take good care of the green spaces. They have a lot of parks, you can see flowers in pots everywhere and I saw a lot of trees supported with bars or bamboo sticks (some ficuses are from XVIII century).

Detalii de pe stradă

Details on the street

At the corner of the streets, near the gates and the doors,  you can find little temples where they put scented sticks, fruits and food. When I asked a lady what are the temples for, she answered simply: „For God”.

They don’t have a lot of dust. I checked with my finger on some railings.

There are a lot of video surveillance cameras, especially in the hotels area.

Every sign is written in both Chinese and Portuguese (Macau was a portuguese colony from the middle of the XVI century to 1999)

Cops are short (of course, they couldn’t be taller than the rest).

On the dashboard of the cars, in front of the passenger, they keep collections of toy figurines.

I saw a lot of people wearing sneakers with bigger sizes than what they actualy need, so they had to drag their shoes. And I saw so many slippers that I don’s see in Bucharest for a whole summer. A lot of slippers, any kind of slippers, anywhere (even in casinos).

Mijloace de transport

Transport

They have the wheel on the right side of the car, so they drive on the left side of the street, so I’m always confused when I have to cross the street.

The public transport is very good because the traffic is smooth, but also because the bus drivers drive like crazy.

Passengers have to wave their hands for bus to stop in the station. You have to get in the bus using the first door (where you have to pay for your trip) and you have to get off using the second door. In the front of the bus there are two cameras and a screen that shows the speed of the bus. There are USB plugs to recharge your phone, free WiFi and two screens with jokes and advertisements.

I think I saw maybe 10 bicycles and a lot of scooters.

Detalii din locuințe

Inside the houses

Where we live there is no way to heat the house. They have air conditioners, but only with cold air.

The plugs have three holes, like in the United Kingdom. You need an adapter for your electronics.

Își usucă hainele aproape numai pe umerașe. Asta înseamnă că da, chiar și chiloții.

They dry all the clothes on hangers. Yes, including underpants.

Hotels and casinos

Each hotel has a main theme and tries to be different than the others. For example, The Venetian has channels, gondolas and gondoliers, The Parisian has his own Tour Eiffel (half of the original Tour from Paris, which means 162 meters), Wynn Palace has a dancing fountain and gondola lifts, MGM has a huge aquarium, eight meters tall.

Each hotel has his own fragrance, which is spread through the air conditioner system.

If you want to go to a casino, you have to be over 21 and your passport (they will ask for it, for sure).

Baccarat game, 500 years old, it’s the most appreciated game in Macau. In all 38 casino around the area you can see the Chinese people gathered around the tables (in 2010 this game generated 72% of casino profits). I’ve heard a story about the Chinese and their belief in luck. They have to demonstrate that they are lucky, so they raise money and then come to play in Macau (in China, gambling is forbidden).

In the casinos and in the shops area of the hotels it is very cold (it’s a big difference at the begining, when you enter the building), so take a blouse or a jacket with you. If you plan to spend some time in the casino, consider taking also a cap or a sweatshirt, even long pants (the purpose of the low temperature is to keep you awake and playing the games for longer time).

It’s not unusual to see in the  casinos, during the weekend, a lot of groups of tourists, with badges, a guide who caries a flag, etc. They come with big buses and they probably take a tour of all the casinos in Macau. From Friday, until Sunday, it is very very crowded.

Don’t miss the chance to visit Macau because it’s an area who offers luxury and gambling, but also wild nature, beaches and narrow streets. I enjoyed Taipa and Coloane a lot, but I didn’t know how to escape quicker from Macau Peninsula because there are a lot of tourist concentrated in a small area (the historic center).
